A City of Care
Urban Research & Narrative Mapping | West Oakland, 2025

A City of Care is a visual and narrative mapping of West Oakland through the daily walk of a local elder, Greg. This research project traces how informal care networks emerge not from policy, but from benches, routines, conversations, and memory.

Across three chapters, the booklet explores:

  • Elders as the Archive: personal histories layered over erased urban maps

  • Protocols of Care: neighbor-to-neighbor support systems beyond official infrastructure

  • Regional Flows, Local Fractures: how freeways like I-980 physically split care pathways

This slideshow asks: What happens when care isn’t scheduled or funded—but lived?
And how do we design with, not over, these rituals?
